OK, I have to blow the horn for the Ohio Lactation Consultant Association
(OLCA). We have made money on our annual Breastfests (fifth one was held
in April) and this year we awarded 3-$500 scholarships to people who
wanted to add to their breastfeeding knowledge (not IBCLC's). The money
had to be applied for, with reasons given why financial help was needed
(in general--no financial statements required). We also gave out awards
(not monetary) for the most breastfeeding supportive: state legislator,
business, media outlet, hospital (the only one in Ohio certified by
BFHI), physician, WIC project, OLCA member, and breastfeeding peer
helper. It was great! We will repeat again for '99.

Our organization is only $25/year and we have a pretty good library that
members can use--complete ILCA tapes bought every year, JHL, books, and
we're adding slides and videos. You don't even have to come to meetings
to get the use of the library, you can just contact the librarian. So
for a reasonable amount people in Ohio can keep up with the latest in
breastfeeding info.
