She obviously stopped for her own reasons, not the health of the
baby, after all formula is just as good and now she wants to be
breastfeeding 'cause she MISSES it? Give me a break, what about all the
stuff the poor little baby is missing!
Dear Friends:
I think that it is fabulous that this mother is missing breastfeeding. I
wish I could sit and embrace her grieving. Who knows what led her to stop? She
must be so surprised at her visceral reaction.
Maybe she bought the mainstream view that breastfeeding doesn't matter,
that formula is almost as good. Maybe she thought it would be easy to stop. She
is working, and many working mothers stop because they have to say "no" to
something. They can't say no to their job or their lives, and they may believe
that switching feeding methods is on a level from switching from one brand of
soda to another.
I would say to her, "You have learned a lot from this experience. I will
be happy to help you if there is another baby." I would teach her about the
S.O.F.T. techniques and reinforce that she is still a loving mother. I would ask
her if she is interested in relactating, and suggest that she could use her
breast as a pacifier.
Life teaches hard lessons sometimes; the biggest lessons always seem to
be the most painful.
    warmly,
