Phone call originated as a friend of a friend, permission to post.

Woman (hard not to call her 'mom' <g>) is in her mid to late 40's and was
diagnosed with fibrocystic breast disease many years ago. Has never been
pregnant or lactated. She is currently experiencing what she called
mastitis in the right breast. Several years ago she had a papilloma removed
from this breast and a duct rebuilt. Since that surgery she has had
occasional discharge that is cloudy and yellowish. On Friday she developed
a 'sore spot' at about 5 o'clock just below the areola. The soreness
continued to spread and most of her breast is now swollen and tight and she
experiences redness that 'surrounds' the breast in the nipple, areola and
about 1" off the areola. The breast is extremely uncomfortable, but she
does not have a fever. She is having some discharge at the point, but says
that it is within the range of normal for her.

I am rather unfamiliar with the non-lactating breast so any information
would be greatly appreciated. My mind immediately jumped to inflammatory
breast cancer, but of course would like to have more than that to offer to
her when I return her call.

Thank you.
