I think there are some real reasons to sometimes give probiotics to
newborns. 33 years ago and pregnant with my first daughter, it was a
terribly cold dry winter and I had bronchitis with non-stop coughing. My
OB/GYN prescribed penicillin for me and for my husband (he asked for a scrip
also) as we could not sleep from coughing.

I have always wondered about the antibiotic affecting her gut even after
birth as the good colonization comes from the mother as the baby passes
through the birth canal. What if my organisms were out of kilter from the
penicillin? It also did not help gut closure that she was given sugar water
in the hospital after separation from us. She had 3 months of colic and I
wonder how much these two events contributed to it. My second daughter born
at home breastfed within 10 minutes of birth and never cried from tummy
upset.
