Because tired post partum Moms hear what they "think" they hear and not
necessarily what has been explained, I give written information to all of the
Moms that I see in the hospital setting. Part of the discharge packet is a
pamphlet that briefly explains how to tell that the baby is getting enough
breastmilk. On the back of the pamphlet, that was printed by the New Mexico
Breast Feeding Task Force, is a 24 hour chart with spaces to check for voids,
bms and feedings. New Moms have told me that they like the chart and use it
as a model if there is a question about baby actually getting enough to eat.
I also explain how many voids and bms to expect after the baby is 5 days old.
A trick to checking whether there is urine in a super absorbent diaper is to
put a kleenex in the bottom of the diaper. If it is crumbled when the diaper
is changed, the baby has peed.

P.S. When explaining positioning over the phone, I can now position the phone
and a pretend baby while holding my breasts at the same time. I understand
that I am entertaining to watch while on the phone:) Good luck again with your
new program.
