Hi! This is my first entry on "Lactnet". I met several of you at ILCA last
July, and as a new person was VERY impressed with the professionalism and
dedication of the group that was there. It made me proud to be associated
with such a group!
Now for my problem, which I hope to get some help for! I have a Mom who
delivered six days ago. This is her 2nd baby, she quit last time after
breastfeeding for 10 days with severe burning in her nipples and sharp,
shooting pains in her breasts. We all know what that was! With this baby,
things started out well, but her milk came in the day after delivery, and by
day three she had quite reddened nipples spreading up past the areola, and
severe pain with latch-on. I gave her hydrgel dressings to use, after seeing
that baby latched on well, and asked her to call me the next day if things were
not improving. The fourth day, her nipples were even more red, she was very
engorged (baby only feeding q 3-4 hours with plenty of output). She started
using a pumping and started the P.Gima tx. for yeast, as she reported beginning
to have sharp pains with feedings. It's now day six. She still has extreme
pain with feedings or pumping, and sees no improvement. She has no fever. She has cracked nipples, baby is latching on well, plenty of output. Do we need to
wait longer to see improvement with the Diflucan, etc.? If it isn't yeast, or
mastitis, what else could it be? Any ideas out there?
