I was consulted by a dietician (not the pt pediatrician) as she was
working with a mom of a 3month old baby that is hospitalized due to
dehydration and <10% on growth chart that wants to breast feed. The mom
is a nurse who was exposed to HIV + pt body fluids by a splash in the
eye. She was put on preventative meds and told not to breastfeed until
her meds were completed. During that time, she pumped and dumped and
baby received a traditional formula. He vomited and had diarrhea after
receiving the formula. He is now on Neocate which I'm told is VERY
expensive. The pedi told mom the reason he cannot now have her milk is
due to the fact he has developed a sensitivity to protein/casein and if
she gave breastmilk , the allergins would be the same. She has been
told to stop pumping as he will never be able to breastfeed again. I
don't know a lot about it, but I feel she should at least try to give
her milk because the composition of cows milk and human milk is
different. I understand the Neocate is all synthetic. He has improved
since getting Neocate but mom doesn't want the expense and would rather
breastfeed if possible. Any thoughts on this?
