Joy, I had a client with bilateral breast reduction who reported to me
that her nipples and areola had been completely severed and
repositioned. The ONLY problem she had (she breastfeed exclusively for
6 months) was pain while the baby was latched on. We worked out that
it was painful when the baby compressed directly over the well healed
suture lines. We were able to figure out positioning that was far
enough back on her areolas that nipple trauma was avoided but not so
far back that the strongest compression was directly over the old suture
line.

I'd like to add this was an unusual case in many ways. I have looked
for similar tenderness in the breast reduction patients I've seen since
(I'd estimate 10 -20) and have not seen it. She also a great milk
supply, and recannulated (I assume) ducts: things not seen in every
breast reduction. I learned "never say never" from her.

Carla
