Seema, this doesn't answer your question about "what's in soy formula?" but
I wanted to say that this list of ingredients in AIM- the disgusting ways
they are obtained, their dangers, etc- is perfect! Can anyone direct me to
other similiarly worded "ingredient" lists, that I can show parents who
don't read the labels or think about what goes into AIM or where it comes
from. Other ingredients like:
* fatty acids) since parents think they have to buy the DHA/ARA stuff...
polyunsaturated vs. saturated fatty acids, the percentage of fat calories
from linoleic acid in human milk vs. cow's milk...etc
*whey:casein) a nice "cow milk is for baby cows" type explanation, why
formula is so hard for baby's tummy to digest
*iron (which Naomi Baumslag addresses in Milk, Money, and Madness on pg 86-
"49% of the iron in human milk is absorbed, less than 10% of the iron in
cow's milk and only 4% of the iron in iron- fortified formula is
absorbed....ironically, the consumer willingly pays for an iron-fortified
formula to ensure their child is getting this important mineral, yet the
extra iron actually adds little value to the product.... iron
supplementation given to breastfed infants knocks out lactoferrin....")

Thank you,
Vicki Hayes RN IBCLC, 37 weeks pregnant!, WA

> WHAT'S IN INFANT FORMULA? WATER: May contain high levels of fluoride.
> CORN SYRUP: Contains glucose. Mother's milk contains lactose as the main
> carbohydrate. Not all brands of formula contain lactose.
> SUCROSE: Contains no lactose. The wrong sugar for babies.
> SOY OIL: Processed using high temperatures and chemicals, bleached and
> deodorized. Likely to be rancid.
> WHEY PROTEIN: High temperature processing likely to destroy fragile whey
> proteins.
> SOY PROTEIN ISOLATE: Highly processed, contains phytoestrogens that can
> adversely affect baby's hormonal development and depress thyroid function.
> Does not have GRAS status.
> CARRAGEENAN: Extremely hard to digest. In most ready-mixed formulas,
> carrageenan is one of the main causes of digestive disorders in
> formula-fed infants, not lactose-intolerance. Caused liver problems and
> retarded growth in rats.
> SOY LECITHIN: Extracted from the soy oil sludge. Likely to be high in

> SYNTHETIC VITAMINS: Often have the opposite effect of vitamins naturally

> FREE GLUTAMIC ACID (MSG) and ASPARTIC ACID: Neurotoxins formed during
