I think we all want to think of breastmilk as the miracle fluid that will
solve all the world's problems and in that accord, want to ride up like a knight
in shining armour. But step back a moment and realize that the role we play is
that of an educator and an supporter. We help women learn where and how to
get information and resources, teach them techniques, praise them, and
encourage them. We should not ever encourage private milk donations. IAs a health
care professional, the liability of private donations is too risky-both physical
and emotional risks. This woman apparently has some other issues if she can't
use donor milk because her husband wouldn't allow it. Your role is to provide
her with the phone numbers and websites for the the milk banks, and then let
her contact them. They have medical directors (MDs) who may be able to provide
information and guidance to her MD. The milk bank can provide information on
adult uses, the safety of the milk, etc which may help her husband be more
accepting. They can also provide information on costs, billing, etc. Then it will
be up to that team to follow through on your initial referrals.
