Hi all
Debra asked "Emily, Did anyone plot this baby's growth on the new WHO
graph for breastfed babies?"
Please, please, please let's not be caught referring to the new WHO Growth
Standards as 'for breastfed babies'. They presrcirbe NORMAL infant growth.
ALL infants should be expected to grow as described on those charts,
regardless of how they are fed. That was the point of creating them.
If formula fed infants grow diffently from what is described by the new WHO
charts, it is because they are not being fed normally. (In the future ABM
should be held to this standard.)
If we, the lactation community, refer to these charts as 'the breastfed
charts' we cannot then complain when Abbot Ross or Wyeth Nutrition or
someone else produce 'the formula fed charts' to describe how 'normal'
formula fed infants grow.
Right now we need to be educating everyone to understand that it is not
normal for infants to deviate significantly from the new growth standards
(as formula fed infants do), whether breastfed or not so that when the
'formula fed' charts are released we can say - no, these do not describe
normal infant growth.
You will see me on this soapbox regularly!
