Metformin should be safe for breastfeeding mothers. Metformin is in the
same family of drugs as phenformin, about which we know that it does not
lower blood sugar in non diabetic animals. Here's what the manufacturer
says about it. "Metformin in therapeutic doses, does not cause hypoglycemia
when used alone in man or in the non diabetic animal, except when using a
near lethal dose. Metformin has no effects on the pancreatic beta cells."
The baby is presumably not diabetic and the small amounts which get into the
milk should not cause hypoglycemia.
