A mum I have been in contact with via the net is attempting to breastfeed
her 15 month old adopted daughter. The history is that the child is adopted
from Guatemala, was breastfed by mother on a visit (before legalities
completed) at 3 or 4 months of age but when finally placed at 7-8 months
refused the breast. The mum has continued to offer breastfeeding ever since
but without anything past a lick of the nipple being achieved. What I have
seen with older babes like this little girl is that they really need to see
breastfeeding regularly to know what to do. Unfortunately the mum (who
ironically works as a LD nurse) is not in an area where breastfeeding is
well supported and does not know any breastfeeding toddlers. I was wondering
any on Lactnet might be aware of any breastfeeding support group close to St
George Utah?
Alternatively, something I have found to be helpful is to have video footage
of babies and toddlers breastfeeding for the child to watch. This is
something that a friend here found helpful with her daughter (I coopted
friends in the local ABA and home ed groups to provide breastfeeding
toddlers, some of whom where most bemused at their mothers actually offering
breastfeeding! in order for me to video). However, since the US has a
different video format to here I can't just send her a tape. I wondered
whether there might be someone here on Lactnet who might be on the position
of taping something like this for this mum?
I know that I was really lucky when I was working on teaching my daughter
about breastfeeding to have lots of friends and rellies who were
breastfeeding so that she just got the hang of it through incidental
exposure (the best way I think) but there are a lot of mums not so lucky :-(
If you think you can help with support groups close to St George, Utah or
video footage please email me privately.
