Your post contained quite a bit of interesting information, so I'm not sure
what the "this" refers to but here goes...La Leche League is about providing
the support and information you mentioned, to educate a mother so that she can
make her own decisions. IBCLC work is of a professional nature, and makes
specific recommendations for an individual mother. If you mean have I noticed that
over time, and doing LC work, seeing mothers in their homes, have I learned
more about breastfeeding and how to help mothers, yes I have noticed that. The
books and references and phone work help, but nothing is like seeing the actual
mother and baby, and seeing many of them. As LLL Leaders, we come with our
own version of getting breastfeeding to work, and a committment to help other
mothers. Our areas of expertise begin with what we experience, and build through
subsequent children as well as our contact with other mothers over the months
and years. I just said to my CoLeader recently, after a meeting preparing two
mothers to become Leaders, than when I look back at what I knew when I became
a Leader, I wonder how I ever helped anyone! We all learn and grow so much in
this work, both as we change ourselves, as the data changes, and how we
present it as well. I don't know that becoming an LC has done the changing as much
as the desire to learn more and go deeper as a helpful, functioning Leader
motivated me to do the learning required to become an IBCLC, and the motivation
to keep getting better and learning more then refers back to both kinds of
work.
Does that make any sense?
