I have been reading the posts on how to work with moms, latching and s-to-
s. I find that moms and staff are interested in doing s-to-s, but I am also
finding that to actually do it is very difficult. I feel we have to
overcome other obstacles first, such as visitors and mom-baby separation. I
am to the point I am encouraging mom to just hold her baby-even wrapped in
3 balnkets!! Moms just don't hold their babies-especially first time moms..

I think my first step is to encourage keeping mom and baby together-even if
clothed-until at least the first feed. I read somewhere that mom and baby
lightly clothed is still very beneficial. Though it may not be ideal I
feel it is a good start. I feel like I spend too much time explaining
things. Things that probably seem overwhelming to moms. I like the "back
to the basics" idea of recent posts.

We understand that babies are stressed when separated from mom. My question
is how do we convey this message to moms and visitors. They all see
a "very peacefully sleeping" baby. They see that mom is stressed and tired
and needs to recover so they have no problem with doing her a favor by
taking baby from her so she can rest. Are there any visible signs that can
be pointed out to show that even though baby looks peaceful they are
actually stressed?

I want to educate visitors so they will actually want and maybe even
encourage mom to keep baby with her. Wouldn't it be great if a vistor came
in and picked up the baby out of the bassinet and handed baby to mom! What
would be even better is if the visitor stayed home and prepared a delicious
meal for the new mom upon her arrival home! :-)

Thanks again.
