I was upset about the binding of the breasts also. However, the one
saving grace was that it was merely shown with no commentary about
what they were doing and why (unless I missed something). Unless
there is some hormonal or other problem with the mom, the human body
is bound and determined to start making milk no matter what is done
to stop it! When Parlodel was commonly given to "dry up" many moms
only experienced delayed onset of milk, not a complete supression.
Of course, it would have been wonderful if the possibility of
donating milk had been mentioned as one way of making something
positive about a very negative experience. While not for every mom
who has lost a baby, many do find this option to be very healing.
OT, but I was concerned with how they handled having the mom
see/hold the baby. It appeared that this wasn't discussed before
the delivery, but only afterward. Helping the couple cope with
their loss should begin before the baby is delivered! The mom was
very obviously depressed (not necessarily clinical, but situational
depression) after the delivery which was not a very appropriate time
to first suggest she would benefit from holding the baby. (In
fairness, I taped the show and so missed the last 5 minutes since
something had apparantly delayed the start of the program so when my
VCR stopped taping at 10:00 the program wasn't over yet.)
