In teaching my breastfeeding class today, the nursing students attended. Prior to the class I spoke with them about our duty as HCP to ensure that we discuss BFing with the new mothers not so much as a choice but as survival for the infant, as necessary. We talked about how natural disasters and extreme circumstances force us to look at the reality of our "choices".
Their eyes were bulging (the nursing instructor's as well) and their attention was captured and they listened very closely as I discussed the possibility of re-lactation. I gave them all of the reading materials we give to new mothers and told them it was REQUIRED reading and that they had a duty to become proficient in lactation so that they can provide properly for their patients. I felt a different kind of energy from them to learn. The situation that they have witnessed has made breastfeeding seem more important. It's like they are making the connection with it as survival, and not just well it's great if it works out."
