<< Is soy somehow worse than cow's milk?>>
Interesting question. There are studies that indicate greater long-term
ill effects for soy-fed babies. I will dig some out later and send
references. There are even people who think adults should not eat soy.

<<In the absence of wet nurses and affordable banked breast milk, an
organic
formula would be the lesser evil.>>
Absolutely true. But are we content with lesser of two *evils*? That makes
me want to work harder at breastfeeding promotion!

<< I don't see why anyone would object to it on the shelves of a natural
food store.>>
I would expect a natural food store to stock only n-a-t-u-r-a-l food.....

We are going from a bean that needs a great deal of processing to be
digestible, to a powder whose main qualification for infant nutrition is
that it can be made up into a white liquid that looks like mammalian milk.
How can this be called "natural"?

No one is saying that artificial milk should not exist, nor that it should
never be used, even by breastfeeding supporters where necessary (I see some
defensiveness creeping in to some of the posts). And we want the highest
standard possible for the babies who can't be breastfed.

But artificial milks should not be promoted in any way, and nor be sold in
a natural food store - though perhaps technically they could be sold in an
organic food store if they were organically grown? :-)
