I have fond memories of one specific "night call" incident: a mother of a
baby girl who had been born quite prematurely (weighing 3 pounds at birth)
had been breastfeeding for most day-time feedings (with some help and
support from me) but was told she had to stay in the hospital overnight and
have "successful" feedings all night long before she could take the baby
home. So we arranged that she could call me if she had any difficulties. I
remember sitting up in bed at 2 a.m. quietly talking to her as she struggled
with getting the baby latched on, and the triumphant feeling when she
started to swallow milk. And we both felt excited when the baby was weighed
in the morning and the mother was told she could pack her up and take her
home.
