great topic and yes, controversial. in my practice, i tell mothers that this
topic is controversial. i state that some LCs or bf experts will counsel
that you avoid all alcohol while bf. (for some of us that would be years),
while other LCs or bf experts will counsel you that is ok to have the
occasional drink. then i state i fit in w/ the second group. i tell them
that all i have read and heard from bf experts leads me to the conclusion
that one drink, on special occasions or at occasional social functions would
be ok. then i give examples, saying something like "for example you might
have a beer at a crawfish boil (this is a southern usa thing), or a small
daquiri (another southern tradition) on your birthday, or have a glass of
wine at a wedding." most of my clients state they do not drink beer nor wine
nor 'hard liquor' but would occasionally have a wine cooler or daquiri. in
fact today a mom asked could she have a daquiri now that she had delivered
the baby. i go on to say that if the mom does not want any exposure to the
baby, and does have a drink, she could wait about 2 hrs before bf the baby.
i also state that she could go by her feeling of intoxication, and that if
she had one glass of wine over dinner but did not feel intoxicated, then her
blood alcohol levels (and milk levels) were likely very very low. I do tell
moms w/ very premie babes or sick babies in nicu that i feel it is best for
her to avoid alcohol for now.
Sorry this was so long, you have to realize that in new orleans drinking is
very very common. bars are open 24/7. i guess we are one of the drinking
capitals of the world (not saying this is a good thing).
