Dear Friends:
I had the opportunity to attend the 2-day workshop on Feeding and
Swallowing in Infancy by Lynn Wolff and Robin Glass. Besides being
occupational therapists with 20 years of experience at a tertiary center,
they are also lactation consultants.
They presented such a thorough workshop, starting with basic anatomy and
physiology of sucking and swallowing, the role of compression and suction,
the integration and coordination of suck/swallow/breathe, tests and
procedures for monitoring and diagnosis, sucking mechanics at bottle and at
breast, various disorders (such as reflux and feeding induced apnea), making
the transition from tube to oral feeds, how to select the best bottle nipple
for a particular situation, supplemental feeding devices, and case
presentations.
People came from all over the USA to this workshop which was held in a
Boston suburb. I drove up with two other LCs from 6 hours away, folks flew in
from California and Michigan and Illinois.
I have needed something like this during my whole lactation career. I
have been picking up bits and pieces and now I have been exposed to such a
huge, organized, logical and essential course that I am really excited to see
my next client! I am also buying a teaching pediatric stethescope so I can
started sharpening my assessment skills.
I wish this material was part of basic IBCLE-preparation. They have a
textbook, which they are revising.
If ever you have a chance to go to anything these wonderful women are
presenting on this topic, go. It is worth it.
     Warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MSN, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CIMI, CCE, craniosacral therapy
