Hi Judy!
Some mothers with whom I have worked have had good results by "recruiting"
the coworker to their cause. This can be delicate, and takes some hard work
and imagination. What is the coworker's agenda? Is there some "pet project"
the coworker is heavily invested in? Approach the coworker with an open and
respectful attitude, make a simple statement about the importance of
breastfeeding to you (the Mother) and ask the coworker for their help and
support in exchange for your (the mother's) help and support of the
coworker's project.
For example:
"Jack, I know that increasing teacher accountability is a very
important issue for you. I feel very strongly about providing my baby the
food nature intended. I could really use your help and support in educating
the other faculty and staff about the benefits, to our school and community,
of continued pumping and breastfeeding. Is there some way I can help you in
exchange?"
Some mothers find that all the objections were due to an intrinsic
insecurity, and once the objectionable person feels heard and valued, the
objections stop. Of course, you may also run the risk of having this person
Overshare.... But, who can't use a daily lesson in respecting others?
