Ginny,
There is no easy way to do this. I have never been able to effect this
change in 30 yrs. Individual mothers rarely can be persuaded to keep their
baby out of the nursery, or to stick with exclusive bf, once they are in the
hospital and subject to all the opinions and interventions of the staff and
of their own friends and families, influences of their own cultural
expectations, etc.
However, if the entire hospital signs on to work towards Baby Friendly, then
it can be done. That is why the Baby Friendly steps include Antenatal
education, Post-discharge support, and education of the *entire* hospital
staff, for a minimum of the 18 hrs course, *and* purchasing the formula that
is needed (not getting it free from the formula marketers).
Even though I have not been all the way through the Baby Friendly process, I
would have to say that is the only way to go, and hope you will be in
contact with the successful folks who have gotten it done. (I've worked at
one hospital that looked into this and we even had our certificate of
intent, but administration ultimately chose not to pursue it).
Best of luck,
Laurie Wheeler RN MN IBCLC
