What I aspire to, for my children, is a good strong work ethic, a sense
that they can make do with what they can get (I swear they're going to
put "she made to" on my gravestone!), devotion to family and loving
relationships, and a life filled with creative and community work.
None of these are contrary to working at McDonald's. Au contraire.
When my teenagers were younger, they used to say things like, "When I
grow up, I am going to be a mother, a ballet dancer and a waitress."
