I'm sure you're right about a casual reference to wet-nursing history not
being proof that "old" milk isn't good enough for "new" babies.  However, my
first reaction when faced with a problem to solve is to look for a parallel
case or analogy, so that's what I did here.

What I remember reading about the heyday of French wet-nursing was that the
men who organized the wet-nursing (a wry analogy tempts me to call them the
wet-nursing pimps) collected the babies in the cities and transported groups
of them in horse-drawn wagons to the country wet-nurses, which might be a
journey of a few days.  After that kind of treatment, no wonder many of the
babies died.
