HI Nikki and others,

This reminds me of a mother I visited last week.
She asked me if it would be harmfull for her 4 week old if she went out for
shopping with her baby in a pram. This mother really would like to go out.
But she felt guilty because the baby has to sleep in his own bed and that
you have to reduce stimulusses

In my area newly parents are told that Rest en Regularity is very important
for their baby.
Here a translation (excuse me for my english) with the rules for the parents
and their baby.

Highlights:
You have to put the baby awake in his own bed.
I baby also has to learn to be alone and play alone.

"Preventing of crying and fussyness
Crying and fussyness can be prevented in most cases if there is already
attention in the first weeks (NL: kraamtijd) for regularity. ....
If the baby is put to sleep - awake- in the babies own bed after a feeding,
the baby will learn to sleep without help. Crying at the beginning of sleep
is normal. De first days the baby can fall asleep during a feeding. Then it
is also better to put de baby in his on bed instead to sit with the baby on
your lap. In bed the baby can sleep undisturbed the sleep that he needs.
....""

"The baby has to sleep in the same place: during the day in a cot/cradle in
a quiet place and during the night on the same nightsleepingplace (cot or
cradle)
A baby play's in his playpen ( this is not a place to sleep!)
Unambiguity in the place for playing and a place for sleeping offers
predictability"

"Regularity:
The same sequence of events in this sequence:
sleeping- waking- feeding - cuddling on arm or lap- baby has to be alone or
playing alone in playpen - baby tired: put the baby -awake- in his cot to
sleep - sleeping etc.
Repetition gives recognision and predictability for the baby. They will
come in a familiair behavior sequence."

"Rest:
A healthy alternation of waking and sleeping, a quiet environment. No TV or
radio the whole day long.
Not more then one trip a day (shopping, visiting someone)".

Ok I agree that regularity can help a mother and parents to establish a
relationship.
but these "rules" about playing alone in a pen and put the baby awake in his
bed....make me shudder.

When I was there, the baby fell asleep after a feeding and the baby was
lying prone on the mothers chest.
I told the parents that I consider it always as a gift to see a baby sound
asleep on the chest of one of the parents.
