Hi Lactnuts
What would you do? A bf advocate at work made lovely banners for WBW. The
banner had a globe, a slogan, a bottle with an X thru it, then an older baby
sitting up smiling. Now this doesn't offend me but I knew it would get a lot
of nurses riled up. I suggested to change the banner, leaving out the bottle
part. The advocate (not an LC) didn't want to. Later, lots of nurses and
ancillary staff were very upset, wanting to throw the banners away. The
usual responses from nurses was "I bottle fed and my kids are fine" or "what
if a mom can't bf, is adopting a baby, etc." I know the answers but
understand they are not where I am re bf yet. Formula influence and bottle
feeding culture are still major here. We are committed to improving with our
cert. of intent, however not everyone is on the bandwagon yet. My opinion
was to eliminate the bottle symbol, since the banner does not necessarily
need that to give an effective message. I feel we are making headway but
need to slowly change ATTITUDES first. Attitudes must change before
education can really occur. Ultimately I edited the banner to remove the
bottle X symbol and just leave the picture of the baby. I was saying to my
husband, the tug boat driver, I would wear my X bottle pin to an ilca conf
but not to work - yet. No flames please.

I am envious of the ones who attended the great ILCA conf. Keep those
reports coming.
