Hi Jaye
I missed the earlier post on this so I am assuming that there are some other
indicators apart from ac/pc weights suggesting that there is a problem here.
By my calculations 18 fluid oz is 532 millilitres. According to Jaqueline
Kent and colleagues' research, this could be within normal range. Her team
(along with Professor Hartmann) found that 24 hour intake amongst
exclusively breastfed babies between 1 month and 6 months of age ranged
between 478-1356g. I wonder if breast compressions, switch feeding and
simply feeding the baby more often might increase this bub's intake enough
to give you some time to work out what else is going on - or to work on
improving his oral tone.
I don't know about American mums but I am loathe to start a regime of
feeding, expressing, supplementing, washing up and starting all over again
with mums whose days are already full of baby care tasks so I wonder if
there is a way to 'feed the baby' without the use of lactation aids. Adding
extra tasks to a mother's already busy day - and providing her with a lived
experience of bottles, cups or SNS being a more reliable way of feeding her
baby - can be enough to convince Aussie mums that breastfeeding just isn't
worth the bother.
Good luck
