I apologize if I put words into Dr. Karp's mouth (or messages).
That is a pitfall of electronic communication. It is hard to see the
spirit in which the message was written.

Respectfully,

Gina Gerboth

PS Dr. Karp, can you clarify here (for the benefit of those who haven't
read your book)...Are you recommending that young babies be given tea in
a
bottle? Two-week-olds?

Dear Gina,
I absolutely agree with you that when we use email the complexity of the
real world often gets reduced to absolutes and stereotypes. We are both
working towards the same goal to support families and to encourage them
to nurse as long as possible....for everyone's health, well-being and
happiness!

Regarding tea, when mother's in my practice do give bottles (and
certainly many do not...informed consent) I always avoid giving formula
if I can...the other options are pumped breast milk or water/herbal tea
(usually peppermint or chamomile). The benefit of the tea is that it
doesn't require pumping (which is extra work for already hard working
new moms), may have a calming effect and doesn't satisfy them for long
so it has little impact on their vigor and frequency of nursing.

Best wishes,

Harvey
