Hi All,
Nancy, I wanted to thank you for your comments. Many times I find myself
having to remember that what works best for the full term infant may not
always work best for the pre-term for a whole variety of reasons. Thank you
for being the BF advocate as well as the voice of reason where these babies
are concerned. We may not always like to hear that breastmilk alone is not
perfect/optimal, but it is good to be reminded. These pre-term infants
aren't even supposed to be here, you know? The fact that medical science
keeps them alive when they are simply too young and underdeveloped to
survive on thier own is a miracle. However, the human body is not able yet
to produce milk for the very pre-term infant with all the appropriate
nutrients and protiens. Until our bodies figure out that our babies can
survive at 23 wks gestation (need a BIG jump in evolution here...) and
produce breastmilk that is completely suited to these needs in an ongoing
fashion - well we have to rely on medical science to help.

Warmly,
Jaye
