There's a discussion of the disease in the Merck Manual On Line at:

http://www.merck.com/!!usbml3iH0usbnm0qSw/pubs/mmanual/html/mpjngjih.htm

From what I read, diagnosis is done by a blood test (electrophoresis to
determine
the level of VWF) and it can be treated by a pasteurized factor VIII
concentrate
(which doesn't transmit hepatitis or HIV). I didn't find anything to
suggest that
BFing could be contraindicated. I think you're on the right track with dairy
elimination, since anything that causes irritation of baby's gut can produce
bleeding, and the VWDisease makes clotting take much longer.
