Dear Lactnetters,

More comments on WIC food offerings. WIC does offer fresh fruits and
veges in about 20+ states now thru it's Farmer's Market Program. This is not
just for BF moms, but for pregnant women, infants (turning 1 before October),
and children. Indiana has successfully piloted it for 2 yrs in one county,
and this year there will be 10 Indiana Farmer's Markets taking WIC vouchers.
Each participant on the program will get 4-5 vouchers worth $3 each to spend
at the market on fresh produce. That may not be a lot for the whole season,
but hopefully it will get them in habit of going to the market and using
fresh produce to eat & feed to their families. It's also not a year-round
thing, but we are really excited to be able to offer this.

Diane W's JHL editorial has already affected our WIC program! As soon
as I read it I revised a handout given to all of our prenatals with info that
we are required to give them. The old info included the extra "benefits" to
WIC moms if they BF, plus some basic info on why they should BF. It now
reads to the risks of offering ABM, with the other required info. It gets
printed soon, and I am anxious to see the results. This topic is also on our
staff meeting agenda for next month.
