I just read the post on collecting small amounts of colostrum. We use
Medela pumps where the flange disconnects from the pump connector. With
the very small amounts of colostrum that get stuck as was described we
have moms lean back slightly to keep the colostrum from rolling towards
the valve (where it gets stuck). At the end of the pumping we
disconnect the flange from the connector while the flange is pressed
firmly on the breast. We catch the colostrum in a medicine cup (or
sterile container if necessary for NICU's) by having her lean forward
and hold the cup where the connector used to be. Take the flange off
from the top of the breast first and then scrape the bottom of the
flange up to catch any drips. It works really well for those moms
pumping very small amounts and nothing is lost or stuck. You can then
cup feed, syringe feed, whatever. Hope it works for you!
