Hi Lisa,

How frustrating for you to be *almost* there, then come up against a
major glitch.

In our community of Austin, TX, some hospital LCs have
found it easy to have LLLLeaders or Peer Counselors become hospital
volunteers. This usually requires an orientation, proof of TB tests
and up-to-date immunizations.

Then after following the LC to learn
where things are and coming to an agreement on how to document a
visit, (some chart in pt charts, some chart elsewhere), the volunteer
can visit mothers in her capacity as a breastfeeding educator. There
is a clear understanding that the volunteer will introduce herself
and her capacity to the mother. Also, that the volunteer will refer
to the IBCLC anything outside the realm of "normal". In this capacity,
the volunteer has many opportunities to observe special circumstances
while providing a needed service to the hospital

Hang in there, you'll find a way. Your experience is valuable, your
time is precious. You can do these mothers a lot of good.
