We are working with a lactating woman who had a breast biopsy about 1 and1/2
weeks ago. Apparently they had difficulty with the biopsy, and used a
fairly wide bore needle. She has called our lactation department, as milk
is continuing to leak out of the breast onto the surface of the skin. We
have recommended a number of interventions, keeping the breast empty,
providing direct pressure to the area, etc. She has informed us that she is
soaking through about 5 gauze pads every 24 hours. There is no sign of
infection, and her milk supply has not been affected, it is just this
leaking. I've not seen her in person, as she is continuing to work. It
sounds like it maybe needed a small suture after the biopsy. This is a
first for me, can anyone give me any other ideas or recommendations?
Thanks!
