A nearby Episcopal church, a pretty modern one, has a lovely sculpture of
Mary and Jesus. He looks about 12-18 months old in the depiction. He's not
actually nursing, but looks like he just did or is just about to. It's my
three year old's favorite depiction of them, and mine too!

Advent and Christmas are my favorite times to preach, particularly because
mothering through breastfeeding has been so profoundly spiritual for me.
Most of the "Mommy Priests" I know make sure they are preaching on Christmas
Eve, particularly if they are pregnant. I generally work in something about
how putting a baby--of divine origin or not--in a manger is at best
impractical and at worst dangerous (most of the mothers in the congregation
laugh knowingly). I have this image in my head of a very focused and
relatively serene teenage mother and her slightly stunned fiance, surrounded
by farm animals and migrant workers and strangers (And angels, of course,
perhaps the best midwives and postpartum helpers of all).

I also think Jesus was a very high need baby--I just can't imagine he would
have allowed himself to be plunked down on a bunch of straw to hold court.
That's just my opinion, though. . . .
