One of the nurses that I work with has a sister who delivered at 24 weeks. I
don't remember where she delivered,but she tells me that in that NICU babies
are not given any fresh breastmilk until they reach 30 weeks. All milk used
must be previously frozen. Signs hang everywhere that says no fresh milk.
Supposedly this is to kill bacteria? I just heard Paula Meier speak, who I
consider to be one of the best resources on preemies, and she said they used
fresh, refrigerated, then frozen milk, in that order. Has anyone else heard
this, and what is the basis behind it.
