Pat, I want to add to your observations. I am very disappointed in the
pediatric field for totally embracing the 'back to sleep' position as the cure
all for SIDS and not looking at other factors that are probably assisting
the lower rates.
I read an article in the paper today; there is a higher rate of SIDS in
daycare because these care givers are not being careful putting the babies on
their backs. Maybe they are not as closely monitored, or not held as often,
or not given breast milk, or there is smoke or other contaminates in the air,
as contributing factors!!!!!!!

The recent literature is not looking at other variables that could have a
very positive effect on reducing the number of SIDS. How do they know that
more babies are not benefiting from the increase in breastfeeding rates?
Have they looked at the decrease rate in smoking in house holds?
As you might tell this is a hot button for me and I can't stand by and
endorse the 'back to sleep' campaign. Would love to hear from some of the
pediatricians on this.
Rather push breastfeeding than back sleeping in Boston.
