Dear Valerie,
As a frequent speaker, I laughed at the "wad of cash" idea. The average
lecture takes me weeks of work to produce, and cost me tons of money. (Since
my talks are picture driven, there is a lot of expensive photography related
spending to produce them, and then lots of additional time doing photo
editing.) When a speaker with a private practice leaves town, they have to
find coverage for their clients, squeeze consults into a shortened week, and
lose business because they are gone. Then you have to deal with the hassle
that flying has become. When you get home, you have a ga-zillion phone
calls and emails to answer, and usually hit the ground running with no break
at all. And none of this even discusses the fact that there usually are
family issues to tend to! The speaker fees barely compensate for the effort.
You really have to love teaching, which luckily I do. The up side is that
you meet wonderful people everywhere you go, who constantly re-affirm that
the best people in the world are in lactation support.
