When you've seen a baby barely whimper, and then latch on immediately and
nurse heartily after weeks of ineffective nursing, you become a believer.  I
would presume that a Ped that across the board claims it's not done anymore
either doesn't have any experience with it, knows little about it, or both.

Yes, some babies will learn to nurse fine and compensate for it.  Others do
not respond to anything except having it clipped.
