I do think there is a hormonal component to the initial nipple soreness some
women have. It makes sense in the light of the nipple tenderness that many
women have at the end of pregnancy. My own experience was that I had not a
bit of soreness during feeding with either baby, but a very mild tenderness
to touch for the first few days with both. Like the person who just posted
on this, I found nursing my daughter during pregnancy very painful, but only
on one side. A sweet story on that. She was around 2 1/2 at the time. I
never complained and tried not to show it when her nursing hurt, but
evidently she picked up on it. One day she announced: "I can't nurse on
that one anymore." I asked why, to which she replied "Because it's sore".
And she never nursed on that side again! Miriam Levitt RN, IBCLC
