Our state health officer was very supportive of breastfeeding when the WIC
Breastfeeding Program began at the Mississippi State Department of Health. He
he retired and we are fortunate to have another health officer who is
supportive. Dr. Cobb, the health officer in 1990 made a policy statement that
the breastfeeding program staff could bring their breastfeeding "babes in
arms". In other words, when they were no longer happy staying in a sling or
in mom's arms she would need to make other arrangements. What did happen was
in some health departments Mom wasn't the only one carrying the baby.... other
employees were begging to hold the baby! But I digress.

My suggestion is if you are holding your support meetings in the health
department or on health department property think about arranging another
location, such as a library, meeting room at a bank or hospital, even
someone's home. Then there shouldn't be any jealousy or complaints from other
employees about your bringing your baby for "show and tell". Good luck,
Camille Foretich, BS, IBCLC, CHES, breastfeeding educator for MSDH/WIC.
