I urge you to turn the table and ask your dentist for published medical
references that support his opinion on early weaning. Emphasize the word
"opinion." If he counters with "you wouldn't understand medical research" or
some such argument, remind him that you can read.

LLL has a great information sheet and bibliography on dental caries.
http://www.lalecheleague.org/cbi/bibcaries.html and
http://www.lalecheleague.org/NB/NBdental.html

I also prepared a brief paper on dental caries which is posted on my web
site http://www.bflrc.com/ljs/myths/dentalca.htm.

Subject: breastfeeding and dental caries help?

I am a La Leche League Leader in Kentucky and have come across a problem
that I hope some of you can help me with. The ped. dentist that I take my
son to and have referred other lactating friends to, regularly advises
weaning after the first tooth erupts. Also, he recommends that if you
don't wean at that time, to absolutely not breastfeed at night and thinks
that toddlers nursing past one year of age is a major problem that needs
to be stopped. He thinks all of the above "always lead to dental caries",
even though my son has perfect teeth without one sign of decay. I am
looking for information to give him regarding breastfeeding and dental
caries. I have been looking back through the archives here, but am a bit
overwhelmed and can't seem to find what I am looking for so far. I think,
even though I am not a dentist, that a lot of this problem with caries
could have many causes, mother's health during pregnancy, child's health,
dental hygiene, amount of juice and other sweets as well, among many
others. But, as I said I am not a dentist, so I need some references I
can give to him, hopefully supporting my point of view.

I had a discussion with him regarding the AAP recommendations on
breastfeeding and he countered with all of his information stating weaning
is the answer to end caries. I don't want to just give up and walk away
without even trying to get him some breastfeeding friendly information.
Can anyone point me in the right direction for the information I need?
Sorry this ended up being longer than expected. Any help with this would
be greatly appreciated!!
