The only times (once in 12 yrs) that I have seen virtually no milk produced by
a mom who appeared okay, hx okay etc. was a mom who had "adolecent" appearing
breasts, experienced no growth during pregnancy and could express only drops
of milk. We finally decided that it came down to her mother having been on
DES while at a critical point in her pregnancy with her. Guess Kenny Rogers
was right when he said, "You've got to know when to fold 'em." We focused on
the positive parenting techniques that she had control over, encouraged her
to continue attending LLL meetings which she did and she seemed okay with the
hand she was dealt after a time of realizing that she was a great mom in spite
of not being able to breastfeed her baby as she had deeply wished.
Validation after a "failure" is a very important part of the work we do as
promoters of breastfeeding. For those moms who will never have the
opportunity to bf - for whatever reason - as well as those who have had a
poor experience, but may have a new opportunity in the future, we need to be
sure not to appear as though we stand in judgement of them for their outcomes.
Stepping off the soapbox I didn't realized I'd climbed up on til I looked!
