I had a problem getting a mammorgam because I was breastfeeding. Two years
ago, when I turned 40 I went to get a mamogram. I felt very strongly about
getting one because my best friend had recently been diagnosed with breast
cancer while still breastfeeding her 2 year old daughter.

I got into the room, shirt off about to put my breast into the machine when
I said "oh by the way, I am still nursing my 3 year old". End of exam.
They refused to do the test. I was told that breast cancer is very rare in
breastfeeding mothers and that I could come back 6 moths after I wean. They
also told me that any mamogram would not be readable during lactation. I
told them that I am a Lactation Consultant and I believe that a well trained
eye should be able to read my test. I was sent away and told "no".

Well, I am now 42 and am still nursing my now 6 year old. He only nurses
about twice a week, but by the guidelines I was given, I am still not
eligible for a mamogram. Maybe when I'm 50- assuming I don't have any more
childern in the mean time!
