I have a client whose baby isn't gaining weight, in spite of 6-7 very wet
diapers and 4-5 "two-wipe" bms a day. Baby is happy, alert, sleeps well,
etc. Doc wants baby to be supplemented with abm for a weight gain.

Parents told him that baby seems to have a sensitivity to cow's milk in
mom's diet, so he, in his brilliance, recommended lacto-free formula.
Hopefully supplementing will be only until the scale is satisfied. By the
way, the mom has been doing breast compression and she refuses to pump to
"supplement" with her own milk, making a high fat feed a couple of times a
day.

What I want to know is whether there will be any more harm done with this
stylish formula than with a regular cow's milk based one. Also, if what the
baby needs is fats, why not give her a tsp of olive or flax oil a couple of
times a day? Is there anything magical about the concoctions that the abm
companies dream up? If we are going to mess up a baby's healthy GI tract
with abm, when all we need is some fat, why not give just the fat?
