There is quite a bit that is puzzling about the recommendations. First,
the recommendation by the CDC, AAP, and AAFP is to "ring" vaccinate
rather than "mass" vaccinate. This means identifying certain exposed
individuals, then vaccinating everyone they are in close contact with.

Now, it seems to me the babies of these men and women will be in close
contact with their parents regardless of who feeds the baby. And, it
seems that whoever feeds the baby becomes part of that "ring" anyway. So
isn't vaccination of the baby and whoever feeds it mandated by this
protocol? I could use some clarification on this.

Second, the vaccine which is freely admitted to be dangerous now (and
the stats seems to warrant this description) is the same as the one
Americans received as infants two decades ago (it's been frozen).

Vaccinia of course is not smallpox, but confers an immunity to smallpox
because it's in the poxy family. Dryvax,R the vaccinia vaccine currently
licensed in the United States, is a lyophilized, live-virus preparation
of infectious vaccinia virus (Wyeth Laboratories). Vaccinia vaccine does
not contain smallpox (variola) virus. Dryvax was produced by
inoculating the vaccinia virus under the skin of calves and harvesting
it from pus in the resulting blisters - a procedure that could expose
vaccine recipients to infectious agents from cows.

There is a race to develop a safer vaccine, but has anyone had success?
And if so, who is making it, and how does it differ from Dryvax?

Finally, it seems most American moms over 20 will have had at least one
smallpox vaccination already, and their reaction is expected to be less
severe. Does this figure into whether the baby should be vaccinated?
What about moms who grew up in other countries?

I will send these questions to CDC and see if I get an answer.
