Hi ALl,
Have a client I am working with who is troubled by what she terms
"excrutiating Let-downs". (I know what she is going thru...been there!)
Baby is 4 wks old, and mom would like to know when these very painful
let-downs will "go away". I told her that they would not go away (bc they
are needed to release the milk higher in the breast, basic info) but that
the intensity of the pain should decrease in time. We discussed how, for
both of us, the expectation of the let-down and its pain had our "shoulders
up to our ears" in sheer tenseness (is that a word?). I reccommened
relaxation techniques, a nice massage by hubby, warm compresses before BF,
checking during BF for relaxation (many times I would find my shoulders back
up to my ears when I thought I was relaxed!). She did say that she was
trying out acetominophen/ibuprofin about 30 min before BF to see if that
would help.
Any other idea for this mom? This is her 2nd baby, 1 time BF. She is an RN
who works in a transplant unit and is very intrigued about this BF "stuff".
ANy other ideas on relieving painful (understatement!) let-downs would be
most helpful!
TIA!
Jay
