This is to Jen O'Quinn ....I nursed my middle daughter up until 5 weeks
before her brother was born. After he was born he developed jaundice and by day 4
the pedi had us so upset with keeping him in the hospital (actually I was
allowed to stay because I was breastfeeding, ok it was 28 yrs ago) we started
pumping and dumping...I was pumping with a little old "horn style pump"....over
8oz every 2 1/2 hrs. I cried as I poured it down the sink, because no one had
a freezer in which to store that much milk. By day five, when they sent us
home I had to go on a search and destroy mission to find a bottle...which he
promptly refused. Fortunately our regular pedi came back to town and told us to
put him back on the breast...which he happily did for the next 2 years. I had
a patient a few years ago who was breastfeeding through out her pregnancy and
wanted to tandem nurse while in the hospital she had copious amts of what
looked like milk laced with butter. So I do think from some experience that some
women will have greater than anticipated amounts of milk if they have
breastfeed through part or all of their pregnancy.
Just heard the wonderful words from the middle daughter as she was mentally
running through her plans for this week and she said "And LLL is on Wednesday
and the baby and me exercise class starts M, W, F but since LLL is on W, I
think I go on Friday." All I could do was grin.
