This is preposterous!
I would be willing to bet a formula salesperson has been around with a
"study" lately.
Are you in the USA? If so, I would get the AAP policy statement and the
Academy of BF Medicine's resources, protocols, and I forget the exact name
but the "Toolkit" from San Diego NICU. These are well respected,
researched, up to date refs.

What I have seen frequently is doctors who do not know enough about bf, or
breastmilk, and really don't believe it's "all that." To add to this, they
get their info from the formula salespeople. In a nicu they see babies
beginning to feed, and only taking small amounts. The growth is slow at
that point. They get the idea to add formula, and AT THE SAME TIME THE BABY
BEGINS TAKING MORE VOLUME, which is what was needed all along. The wt gain
starts right then and they attribute it to formula. I have seen this often.
